ABOUT Waqrapukara

The fabulous building rises at 4300 m s. n. m. on the cusp of a ravine, in the district of Acos, province of Acomayo, department of Cusco.

The stone fortress, which has held the title of Cultural Heritage of the Nation since 2017, is divided into two groups. The first is located in the upper part and consists of two subspaces divided by a central environment. Each space has doorways with double jambs and niches that decorate and give functionality to the environment. It also has passageways.

In the second group, located in the lower part, it is made up of eight terraces that measure, on average, 1.80 m high and 153 m long. Each one is perfectly adapted to the conditions and infrastructure of the place. Likewise, on its west side it has two spaces that have fine rigging, niches and double jamb bays. On the opposite side, the fortress has five more rooms.

Due to these characteristics and the design of the space, several experts believe that Waqrapukara would also have been used for religious ceremonies.

To get to Waqrapukara, you must head from Cusco to the province of Acomayo and continue along the Huáscar branch until you reach the peasant community of Huayqui. The route comprises a 7.5 kilometer journey.
