Mayapán is one of the places that changes how the Maya past is pictured. The archaeological zone, southeast of Mérida in Mexico's Yucatán state, preserves the plan of a dense, walled city that rose after the great era of Chichén Itzá. The National Institute of Anthropology and History, INAH, describes a Late Postclassic capital with civic buildings, residences, shrines and a smaller version of the Kukulcán temple. Yet a responsible travel account must begin with an awkward fact: INAH's specific notice says the site is closed until further notice. Its standard listing still displays hours and prices. That generic listing is not evidence that the closure has ended.
The contradiction matters to anyone planning a journey. INAH issued its closure announcement in February 2024, and reports in 2026 continued to describe talks aimed at reopening. As checked on 29 October 2026, we found no newer official notice withdrawing the closure. Do not set out expecting to enter the archaeological zone merely because a generic page shows an 8 a.m. opening. Verify directly with Centro INAH Yucatán before travelling, and respect any closed entrance. The site remains worth understanding even while access is unresolved: its walls and buildings explain a crucial chapter of Maya political life in the peninsula.
