Rewari Heritage Steam Loco Shed in Haryana preserves something more dynamic than a static line of engines. Indian Railways maintains historic steam locomotives here, and specialist crews have returned selected machines to operating condition. The shed’s tracks, workshops, tools and rolling stock reveal the labour required to keep mechanical heritage alive.
Rewari developed as an important junction on metre-gauge routes radiating from Delhi toward Rajasthan. The steam shed, dating from the railway era of the late nineteenth century, survived the transition to diesel and electric traction and was later developed as a heritage facility. Visitors should distinguish the historic shed from Rewari’s active passenger station; both belong to the railway landscape but serve different purposes.
