About 80 kilometres southwest of Delhi, Rewari’s heritage steam shed preserves a working side of railway history. It is distinct from the busy passenger station beside it: the shed is a railway facility where historic locomotives are maintained, while the station connects the town to India’s passenger network. The Haryana government describes Rewari as the country’s only surviving steam-locomotive shed, a claim that gives the site unusual importance but does not make it an ordinary museum with guaranteed public entry.
The setting makes the distinction easy to miss. Government visitor information places the shed roughly 400 metres north of the entrance to Rewari railway station, in the city of Rewari, Haryana. The short distance does not mean that visitors can simply walk into the depot. Tracks, workshops and stored equipment remain part of railway operations, and access rules can differ from those at a public museum. Treat the shed as an active worksite first and a heritage attraction only when an authorized visit has been confirmed.
