Altun Ha is an archaeological reserve in Belize District, about 31 miles north of Belize City along the Old Northern Highway. The National Institute of Culture and History describes it as an ancient Maya community of considerable complexity and wealth, and an important link in coastal trade routes. Its position between inland settlements and the Caribbean coast gives the site a different story from the better-known Maya centres deep in the forest: exchange, movement and access to maritime resources mattered here.
The name Altun Ha is a modern form associated with the nearby village of Rockstone Pond; Belize’s Institute of Archaeology glosses it as Stone Water. As with many Maya archaeological sites, the name used today is not necessarily the ancient community’s own name. The distinction is useful: visitors encounter a modern reserve and a living landscape around the remains, not a place whose original identity is fully recoverable from its present label.
