High in Romania’s Orăștie Mountains, Sarmizegetusa Regia was the central political, military and religious centre of the Dacian kingdom before Rome’s campaigns in the early second century CE. The site lies at Grădiștea de Munte in Hunedoara County. Its name is often confused with Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the Roman provincial capital founded after conquest roughly 40 kilometres away. They are different places, built for different powers and at different moments in the region’s history.
The distinction matters on arrival. Sarmizegetusa Regia is not a compact city grid with intact streets, but an archaeological landscape of fortifications, terraces and a sacred precinct set into a mountain environment. The National Archaeological Repertory classifies the site as a settlement and military settlement. UNESCO includes it within the Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains, a serial property comprising six defensive works. The six are a group across the landscape; they are not six citadels all contained inside this one site.
