Apulon — Street View

Explore Piatra Craivii near Alba Iulia, the hilltop Dacian site tentatively identified as Apulon, its archaeology and what visitors should verify.

The name Apulon points to an ancient Dacian place described by classical sources, but its exact location is not settled. Romanian archaeological reports call the identification of the fortified site at Piatra Craivii with Apoulon hypothetical. That qualification is essential: the hilltop complex is real and extensively studied, while the link between its remains and the written name remains an archaeological argument rather than a certainty.

Piatra Craivii rises to a maximum elevation of 1,078 metres in the Trascău subdivision of the Apuseni Mountains, about 20 kilometres north of Alba Iulia and near the Mureș valley. The Romanian Archaeological Chronicle describes a limestone outcrop with broad visibility across the middle Mureș basin. Its commanding position helps explain why communities occupied and modified the mountain over long periods.
