Lepenski Vir lies beside the Danube in Serbia’s Iron Gates region, near the village of Boljetin and the town of Donji Milanovac. Today, a modern visitor-centre building shelters the archaeological remains. The river is central to the setting: it shaped travel, food resources and the way people occupied the gorge. The site is part of the Djerdap landscape, which UNESCO recognizes as a Global Geopark; that designation should not be confused with individual inscription on the World Heritage List.
Dating Lepenski Vir is not a matter of one neat year range. The National Museum of Serbia describes its collection as spanning the tenth to sixth millennia BCE, with Mesolithic and Neolithic phases. Serbia’s tourism board highlights artefacts dated around 7000–6500 BCE. These summaries describe different levels of a long archaeological sequence, and the dates used for particular settlement phases vary in research. The secure point for a visitor is that the site preserves a long transition in prehistoric life, rather than a single moment frozen in time.
