Tašmajdan is a central Belgrade park whose pleasant lawns conceal an unusually dense geological and urban history. Its name combines Turkish words commonly interpreted as “stone quarry,” recalling the extraction of the pale stone used in buildings and fortifications. Cavities beneath the area later served other purposes, but casual park access does not include a right to enter underground spaces.
The landscaped park was developed between 1950 and 1954. Palilula Municipality describes a ten-hectare green area with around sixty kinds of trees, divided by Starine Novaka Street into two zones. Playgrounds, outdoor fitness, a dog area, large chess space and a musical fountain make it an everyday neighborhood park rather than a preserved historic enclosure.
