Moray — Street View

Visit Moray’s concentric terraces near Maras with verified access rules and a careful account of their possible uses.

Moray announces itself as a set of concentric terraces descending into natural hollows near Maras, west of Cusco. From the path above, the stone walls draw the eye downward while the surrounding plateau keeps the larger landscape in view. It can look like an amphitheatre, but the comparison is visual, not an explanation of its purpose. Peru's tourism inventory classifies the place as an archaeological site of terraces, and the Cusco culture authority identifies it as part of the territory of the Mullak'as Misminay community. This is an Inca landscape shaped for work and observation, not a stage built for spectators.

The view is powerful because the pattern is so deliberate. The main depression has successive rings of stone retaining walls; other hollows extend the system beyond the image most often reproduced in travel brochures. The terraces adapt to the terrain rather than erasing it. Water management and soils were part of the design. Walking around the permitted route, visitors can see how an apparently simple circle becomes a complex set of levels, orientations and exposures. The stonework is best understood together with the surrounding highland environment.
