That position makes it a useful base for travelers comparing the beaches of Tumbes with those farther south, but the specific stretch you choose affects the feel of the day.

A coastline with several distinct stretches

MINCETUR divides the resource into Punta Sal Chica, Playa Punta Azul and the larger Punta Sal Grande resort area. The official inventory describes the smaller northern cove as curved and sheltered by two low rocky points, while Punta Azul lies between the northern and southern sectors. Punta Sal Grande has the longest open frontage and is the area most visited by domestic and international tourists, according to the same record. These names help explain why “Punta Sal beach” can refer to more than one access point or coastal scene.

A 2022 regional ordinance included Playa Punta Sal among Tumbes’s priority tourism-development zones, and a 2025 regional tourism resolution recognized it as a matter of regional interest. MINCETUR’s inventory, last updated on 5 May 2026, also cites a 2024 report validated by the regional tourism office and district municipality: 2,331 foreign tourists, 3,489 domestic tourists and 2,659 local excursionists. These are dated categories, not a live visitor counter.

Warm water, marine life and activities

The inventory lists swimming-oriented recreation and activities offered around the resource, including kayaking, surfing or bodyboarding, diving, sport fishing, motorized watercraft and yacht trips. Peru Travel similarly highlights canoeing, diving, fishing and coastal food. Availability depends on operators, sea conditions and the exact sector, so do not assume that every service runs from every beach entrance. Ask locally about authorized providers, departure points, safety equipment and the day’s conditions rather than relying on an old promotional listing.

Wildlife is another reason Punta Sal draws attention. MINCETUR’s record lists dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and humpback whales among animals associated with the area; it identifies July through October as the humpback season. That is a seasonal possibility, not a promise of sightings on a particular trip. If you hope to see marine life, choose a responsible local operator, keep a respectful distance and never pursue or feed wildlife. The beach itself can still be rewarding when animals are not visible.

The sea’s relatively warm character and calmer stretches can invite visitors to stay in the water, but conditions are not uniform along the coast. Currents, surf and weather can change. The district inventory records lifesaving and safety services among complementary facilities in Canoas de Punta Sal, yet their presence in town does not mean that a lifeguard is stationed at every section of beach all day. MINCETUR’s current inventory classifies admission to the beach resource as free and gives a general visit window of 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. throughout the year, with more flexible hours during the summer season. This describes the public beach, not the prices or opening hours of hotels, restaurants, tours or water-sport operators. As hours and local controls can change, verify the access point you intend to use, especially for an early-morning or evening visit.

The official access table lists a paved road route from Tumbes city—about 81.4 kilometres—and another from Zorritos, roughly 54 kilometres. The inventory’s description places Punta Sal around 23 kilometres north of Máncora. Use these as orientation figures, not guaranteed travel times; traffic, roadworks, weather and the exact beach entrance affect the journey. If you are combining destinations, confirm the pickup point and return transport before setting out, particularly outside the busiest holiday periods.

The district’s services make an overnight stay possible without assuming a luxury-only experience. MINCETUR lists two- to four-star hotels, other lodging, restaurants, food kiosks, travel agencies in nearby Cancas, parking and basic services in the surrounding settlements. The inventory is a snapshot, so check current openings, prices and reservations directly with providers. The free public beach and paid private services are different things: a hotel or excursion may charge even when access to the shore itself is listed as free.

Punta Sal is best approached as a stretch of inhabited northern coastline, not a guaranteed postcard or all-inclusive package. Decide which sector you want, check the sea and access conditions, and leave room for the pace of the coast. The most useful details are also the least glamorous: knowing the right entrance, arranging the return journey and treating wildlife and local residents with care. That preparation lets the warmth, open horizon and changing light do the work without promising more than the evidence supports.
