Zhana Chimbuleva Amphitheatre — Street View

Visit Nessebar’s waterfront amphitheatre for Black Sea views and cultural events, while exploring the ancient and medieval history around the open-air stage.

The open-air amphitheatre near Nessebar’s old port is a popular viewpoint and performance venue within the historic peninsula. It stands close to the Church of St John Aliturgetos and opens toward a wide panorama of Nessebar Bay. Despite the database name “Ancient Theatre,” visitors should not mistake the present stepped auditorium for a substantially preserved classical theatre. It is a modern cultural stage in a town whose ancient predecessor, Mesambria, did possess public buildings including a theatre.

Nessebar Municipality’s official guide describes today’s amphitheatre as the setting for festivals, shows and performances of several kinds. Its appeal comes from location: stone seating descends toward a stage backed by the Black Sea, while medieval church ruins and traditional houses remain within a short walk.
