The Yard of the Cyrillic Alphabet, or Dvor na Kirilitsata, is a privately created cultural complex on the edge of Pliska. It opened on 2 May 2015 during commemorations marking 1,150 years since Bulgaria's conversion to Christianity. Armenian-born entrepreneur Karen Aleksanyan acquired the land and commissioned artists and builders to create a place celebrating the alphabet and writers from cultures that use it.
The complex is modern, while the historical setting is medieval. Pliska served as the first capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 681 to 893. Nearby archaeological remains and the Great Basilica belong to that earlier landscape. Visitors should not confuse the sculptural park with the national historical-archaeological reserve or assume that its buildings are reconstructions authenticated as part of ancient Pliska.
