Near the village of Srebarna in Bulgaria’s Silistra Province, a freshwater lake and surrounding wetland form one of the Danube region’s most important bird habitats. UNESCO describes the reserve as a 638-hectare property on the river’s western bank, with reedbeds, seasonally flooded woodland and wet meadows. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1983. The lake is not simply a scenic pool beside the river: its water levels and plant communities support nesting and migration, while the broader landscape gives birds places to feed, shelter and breed. The story of Srebarna is therefore about an ecological system, not just a single lake view.
The wetland is especially significant along the Western Palearctic migratory flyway. UNESCO records 99 nesting bird species and habitat for about 80 migratory species. The reserve supports Bulgaria’s only colony of Dalmatian pelicans and important populations of other threatened or conservation-sensitive birds, including pygmy cormorants, ferruginous ducks, white-tailed eagles and corncrakes. It also provides seasonal habitat for herons, spoonbills, ibises, terns and geese. These numbers describe a protected habitat and documented populations; they are not a guarantee that a visitor will see a particular bird on a particular day.
