Urnes Stave Church stands on a promontory above the Lustrafjord in Luster, western Norway. The setting is dramatic, but the building is not simply a picturesque stop: it is one of the oldest surviving stave churches in Norway and the only one on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage dates the present church to the 1130s; UNESCO describes a building tradition that brings together Scandinavian timber construction, Romanesque spatial ideas and carved ornament inherited from an earlier church on the site.
The church is reached at Ornes, across the fjord from Solvorn. Its remote position helped preserve the relationship between the wooden building, the medieval cemetery and the surrounding landscape, but it also makes transport part of planning a visit. A car ferry links Solvorn and Ornes, and the operator lists the crossing as a year-round service of about 20 minutes. The approach is therefore a journey across the fjord and up to a protected monument, not a quick walk from a town centre.
