Rietveld Schröder House — Street View

Explore the Rietveld Schröder House, where movable rooms and De Stijl design turned a family home into a modern-architecture landmark.

At the edge of central Utrecht, the Rietveld Schröder House looks unlike a conventional Dutch family home. It was commissioned by Truus Schröder-Schräder, a recently widowed mother of three, and designed in 1924 with Gerrit Thomas Rietveld. Their collaboration matters: Schröder was not simply a client choosing from a finished catalogue. The museum describes her as an active partner with clear ideas about a home that could support a more open, flexible way of living.

Built in 1924 and occupied from January 1925, the small house became one of the most influential works associated with De Stijl, the Dutch movement that explored abstraction, geometry, primary colors and the relationship between art and everyday design. UNESCO calls the house a manifesto of De Stijl ideals and an icon of the Modern Movement. Its importance lies not in size or ornament, but in the way its structure, surfaces, furniture and rooms were conceived as one design.
