De Wallen is the historic central district widely associated with Amsterdam’s window-based sex work, but it is also a lived-in network of narrow streets, canals, businesses and landmarks. The name is often used loosely for the old center around the Oudezijds Voorburgwal and Oudezijds Achterburgwal. Visitors encounter cafés, shops, cultural sites and the Oude Kerk alongside the area’s adult businesses. Treating it as a single entertainment attraction misses both its urban history and the fact that residents and workers use these streets every day.
The district’s appeal is partly its close-grained cityscape: old canal houses, bridges, small squares and streets that connect the waterfront to the rest of central Amsterdam. It is easy to explore on foot, but the lanes can become crowded, particularly in the evening and on weekends. The City of Amsterdam says the popularity of the center creates pressure on livability and public space, and it deploys additional hosts and enforcement in the Wallen area. A thoughtful visit means moving through rather than blocking narrow routes, entrances or bridges.
