Praça do Giraldo is more than the main square of Évora: it is a broad urban room where the city’s everyday routes, commercial life and long history meet. Arcaded façades frame the open space, while the Church of Santo Antão and the marble fountain establish its most recognizable edge and centre. From here, the lanes of the old town branch into the historic core, making the square a natural point of orientation for a first walk.
Évora’s past is unusually visible around this public space. UNESCO describes a city shaped by more than twenty centuries, from Roman occupation through medieval and royal periods. The historic centre was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1986. Praça do Giraldo sits within that protected urban landscape, but it should not be confused with a single monument: its importance comes from the way buildings, streets, public life and successive renovations work together.
