About 30 kilometres northwest of Lisbon, the Royal Building of Mafra dominates the town with a vast, symmetrical façade. The name “palace” only tells part of the story. The UNESCO property includes the royal palace, basilica, Franciscan convent, Cerco Garden and the Tapada, a former royal hunting park. Together they form one of the most ambitious building projects of King João V, whose reign coincided with extraordinary wealth flowing into Portugal’s empire.
UNESCO records that João V conceived the project in 1711 as a physical expression of his idea of monarchy and the state. Construction began in 1717, and the basilica was consecrated in 1730, on the king’s birthday, before the entire complex was complete. Work continued after that ceremony; the palace project extended through the middle of the century. This distinction matters: Mafra was not the product of a single brief building campaign but a long royal undertaking whose scale grew with its ambitions.
