In Barcelona’s Sant Pere district, the Palau de la Música Catalana brings music and architecture together in a building that still serves its original purpose. The concert hall was commissioned as the home of the Orfeó Català, a choral society, and built between 1905 and 1908 by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Its construction was funded through popular subscription, linking the project to civic participation as well as to the cultural ambitions of the city.
The Palau’s story is not simply that of a wealthy patron commissioning a grand auditorium. The Orfeó Català and its supporters helped create a shared cultural home at a time when Catalan Modernisme was developing its own architectural language. The building was conceived for performances, but also as a public statement about music, craft and collective identity. It remains associated with the Orfeó Català today, while a broader program brings local and international performers to the stage.
