The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is often introduced through its glacial peaks, forests and high pastures. Yet its distinction lies in the way nature and human work remain readable together. This UNESCO-listed cultural landscape in southeastern Andorra covers 4,247 hectares, just over nine per cent of the country. Stone paths, terraces, seasonal shepherd shelters and traces of ironworking sit within a rugged Pyrenean watershed. The result is not an untouched wilderness but a record of how mountain communities made a living from difficult terrain over many centuries.
UNESCO inscribed the property in 2004 under the cultural-landscape criterion, with a minor boundary modification in 2006. Its protected area extends across land belonging to four parishes: Encamp, Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria and Escaldes-Engordany. A surrounding buffer zone adds another 4,092 hectares. The valley’s scale matters to visitors: this is not a single monument with one entrance, but a broad landscape of side valleys and steep elevation changes. The locality shown in a map record should not be mistaken for a trailhead or an address at the heart of the protected property.
