Krak des Chevaliers — Street View

Krak des Chevaliers’ Hospitaller and Mamluk history, layered defences and 2026 conservation, with a dated official warning against travel to Syria.

Krak des Chevaliers commands its hill in Syria’s Homs Governorate with a mass of walls and towers that has made it one of the defining images of the medieval fortress. Its familiar silhouette can suggest a complete and unchanging object. The more revealing story is of repeated building, changes of power and the work required to keep damaged structures standing. The castle’s history continues well beyond the age of the Crusades.

The monument’s importance does not make a leisure journey advisable. Checked on 29 October 2026, France Diplomatie’s Syria security page, updated on 15 September 2026, formally advises against travel throughout the country. Its zoning assessment is dated 13 March 2026. The advice identifies severe insecurity, including terrorism and kidnapping. Conservation progress at a particular castle cannot be treated as clearance for travel through the wider country.
