Hevsel Gardens (Unesco) — Street View

See Hevsel Gardens from Diyarbakır’s historic walls, learn how the cultivated valley sustained the city and plan a respectful visit.

Hevsel Gardens occupy the fertile ground between the historic city of Diyarbakır and the Tigris River. From the plateau above, the change in scale is striking: basalt walls and dense urban streets give way to a broad cultivated valley edged by the river. The gardens are not a formal park laid out for visitors. They are a working landscape whose relationship with the city, water and food supply forms part of the heritage recognized by UNESCO.

The protected property is officially named the Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens Cultural Landscape. UNESCO inscribed it in 2015, recognizing the connection between the fortified city and the valley below rather than treating them as separate attractions. The property covers 521.23 hectares, with a 131.72-hectare buffer zone. Its setting on an escarpment of the Upper Tigris basin helps explain why the city’s walls, gardens, water sources and river views belong in one account.
