Archanes Archaeological Collection — Street View

Discover Archanes near Heraklion through Minoan palace finds, cemetery evidence and verified museum hours, admission and local travel tips.

The Archaeological Collection of Archanes sits in a modern Cretan town where ancient evidence is woven into daily life. Created in 1993 through the initiative of archaeologists Yannis and Efi Sakellarakis, the museum brings together discoveries from Archanes and its surroundings. Its modest scale is an advantage: instead of trying to summarize all of Minoan Crete, it lets visitors follow a set of finds back to the landscapes in which they were unearthed.

The Ministry of Culture describes the area as the location of one of Crete’s important Minoan palatial complexes. The principal palace horizon dates broadly to about 1900–1450 BC, but this does not mean that every object in the collection belongs to those exact centuries. Archanes developed over a long period, and its archaeological story includes settlement, administration, worship, craft and burial evidence from different contexts.
