The ravine marked near Adravasti in the former Itanos area is identified by Sitia Geopark as Maza Gorge. It begins near the highland village of Karydi and emerges just beyond Adravasti, in the dry, sharply modelled country between Palaikastro and Zakros. Far from being a casual roadside walk, it is a long and difficult landform whose interior the geopark recommends only for people experienced in canyon travel.
Maza belongs to Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised in 2015 and still included on UNESCO’s current list of Global Geoparks. Eastern Crete contains extensive limestone terrain, faults, caves and gorges that record a complex geological history. Around Adravasti, erosion has cut a narrow passage through a landscape that can look bare from the road but reveals intricate rock forms at close range.
