In the centre of Varaždinske Toplice, the archaeological park of Aquae Iasae preserves the public heart of a Roman spa settlement. The defining feature is not only ruined masonry but water: the thermal spring still rises within the ancient pool area. Local authorities describe the site as a protected cultural property whose rare combination of archaeology and continuing hydrothermal activity links the Roman town directly with the modern Croatian spa.
The settlement took its name from the Iasi, a community associated with the region before Roman rule. Municipal planning documents place the Roman town’s main development between the first and fourth centuries. Its public buildings occupied the upper terrace of the hill, residential areas descended the slopes, and craft and commercial activity developed lower down. This topography helps explain why the forum and bathing sanctuary dominate today’s visible park.
