Schönbrunn is not simply a grand building on Vienna’s outskirts. The palace, formal gardens, garden structures and long historical setting form a connected Baroque ensemble, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1996. From the broad central axis, the visitor’s eye moves from the palace through the gardens toward the Gloriette on the hill. The relationship between architecture, landscape and imperial display is central to the visit: the grounds are not an ornamental afterthought, but part of the story the Habsburg court wanted the residence to tell.
The estate’s documented history reaches back to the 14th century, when the property was known as Katterburg. It passed into Habsburg ownership in 1569 under Maximilian II. The name Schönbrunn was recorded in 1642, and the palace’s official history says Emperor Matthias’s discovery of a spring is the subject of a legend associated with the name. That distinction matters: the estate’s ownership and building history are documented, while the spring story is presented as tradition, not as a proven eyewitness account.
