Wildlife Island sits in Post-Dispatch Lake, the ten-acre water body beside the Boathouse in St. Louis's Forest Park. It is not a conventional attraction with a gate, ticket booth or trail of its own. Its value is visual and ecological: a green refuge within a busy urban park, seen from the lakeside paths or from an authorized rental boat moving through the connected waterways.
The scale can be deceptive on a map. Forest Park covers about 1,370 acres and officially opened to the public on June 24, 1876, according to the City of St. Louis. The island is only one detail in that much larger landscape, yet it provides a useful pause between the park's major institutions, athletic fields and formal monuments. Visitors who slow down here can watch the lake rather than race from one headline attraction to another.
