Metropolis is not the fictional city from Superman’s stories, but a small Illinois community that made the shared name part of its civic identity. Set in Massac County beside the Ohio River, the town was platted in 1839 and is the county seat. The river, the courthouse square and the surrounding southern Illinois landscape give the place a history beyond popular culture. A visit is best understood as a compact town stop: Superman landmarks are easy to find downtown, while Fort Massac adds a separate layer of regional history a short distance away.
The connection to the comic hero has a specific civic history. In 1972, the Illinois House of Representatives recognized Metropolis as Superman’s hometown. That is a state legislative recognition and a local tourism identity, not evidence that the real Illinois town is the fictional setting in every comic or film. Keeping the distinction clear makes the visit more interesting: residents chose to build a public welcome around a famous name, then added statues, events and a museum that preserve decades of fan culture.
