The Center for American Archeology in Kampsville, Illinois, has connected research, education and public service since 1953. Its museum traditionally interpreted roughly 12,000 years of human life in the lower Illinois River valley, a region where floodplain resources, bluff shelters and deeply stratified sites preserve an exceptional record of Indigenous communities.
As of 2026, however, the CAA states clearly that its museum is closed for repairs until further notice. Travellers should not interpret old seasonal hours as current access. The organization itself remains active: its office, educational campus, research projects and field schools continue, but participation requires the appropriate programme or prior arrangement.
