Trullo Sovrano — Street View

Explore Trullo Sovrano in Alberobello: its unusual upper floor, layered history, UNESCO setting, current ticket details and conflicting official hours.

In Alberobello, Puglia, Trullo Sovrano stands behind the Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian, near Piazza Sacramento. It is one of the town’s largest and most architecturally ambitious trulli, the limestone buildings for which the Itria Valley is known. UNESCO describes the wider trulli tradition as dry-stone construction, with conical, domed or pyramidal roofs built from limestone slabs. Trullo Sovrano is a special case: it has an upper floor reached by an internal staircase, and its construction belongs to a transition toward the use of mortar. Its name, meaning “Sovereign Trullo,” has been in use since 1916.

The house is also one of six components specifically included in UNESCO’s “The Trulli of Alberobello” World Heritage property, inscribed in 1996. That property is not a single museum building: it includes two historic districts and four individual locations, among them Trullo Sovrano. The distinction places the house in a living urban landscape rather than presenting it as an isolated curiosity. A visit can therefore connect the carefully interpreted interior with the wider town, where trulli remain part of Alberobello’s built identity and everyday streetscape.
