Trier stands on the Moselle in western Germany. Much of its appeal lies in how closely its different historical periods sit together: a Roman gateway, a former imperial audience hall and medieval churches all belong to the same walk. For a first visit, combine the monuments in the centre with a viewpoint in the surrounding hills to see how the city fits into the valley.
The Porta Nigra, St Peter's Cathedral, the Basilica of Constantine and the Imperial Baths are good places to start. A day allows time for a selection; we recommend two if you want to explore the archaeological sites at an unhurried pace, visit a museum and leave room for the river and the views.
