Hard Rock Stadium stands in Miami Gardens, north of central Miami, and has served several generations of sports fans under different names. The University of Miami’s athletics history says it opened in 1987 as Joe Robbie Stadium. The university’s Hurricanes football team has played its home games there since 2008, while the Miami Dolphins use it for NFL games. The name Sun Life Stadium, familiar from older travel and sports records, is no longer the current venue name: today the facility is called Hard Rock Stadium.
The site’s identity is broader than football. The university lists the Orange Bowl, the Miami Open tennis tournament and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix among events hosted at the complex, along with major concerts. The grounds include the stadium and the Miami International Autodrome, so event layouts and visitor access vary with the program.
