Stari Ras is best approached as a landscape of connected places. West of Novi Pazar, the hilltop remains at Gradina above Pazarište give the medieval fortress a physical setting; nearby valleys and religious foundations extend the story beyond its walls. There is no intact royal city waiting behind a single entrance. The reward is different: a chance to read how military authority, markets and sacred buildings developed around an early centre of the Serbian state.
The name Ras belongs to a wider historical and archaeological complex, not just one surviving tower. Novi Pazar’s tourism organization identifies several locations associated with that past and notes research into their relationships. The Gradina at Pazarište and the lower settlement of Trgovište are central to the recognized heritage landscape. Keeping the different places distinct is more useful than treating every reference to an early capital as a precise description of one visible ruin.
