Scandola is one of Corsica’s most striking coastlines, but it is not a beach resort or an open hiking park. The nature reserve protects a peninsula of volcanic rock and adjoining marine habitats on the island’s west coast. Its red cliffs, sea caves, scrub and clear water belong to a sensitive ecosystem where protection shapes how visitors can approach. The reserve was created in 1975 and is managed by the Regional Natural Park of Corsica. It also forms part of the wider Gulf of Porto UNESCO World Heritage property, alongside the Gulf of Girolata and the Calanche of Piana.
The reserve’s landscape is geological as well as scenic. The Corsican park describes Scandola as the exposed part of an ancient volcanic complex, with porphyritic rock forming a jagged peninsula and steep coastal walls. Wind, waves and erosion have cut coves, inlets and sea caves into the shoreline. The contrast between the red rock, Mediterranean water and maquis vegetation is a defining feature, but the landforms are not simply a dramatic backdrop: they create a mosaic of habitats above and below the waterline.
