The viewpoint above the Gulf of Porto near Piana gathers the essential elements of western Corsica into one panorama: red granite cliffs, deep Mediterranean water, wooded slopes and the distant forms of Scandola and Capo Rosso. The landscape belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage property embracing the Gulf of Porto, the Calanques de Piana, the Gulf of Girolata and the Scandola Nature Reserve.
Piana itself occupies a plateau about 438 metres above sea level. Between the village and Porto, the D81 road threads through the Calanques, where erosion has carved towers, pinnacles and openings into orange-red granite. The roadside view is spectacular, but its narrow curves and limited stopping space require patience. A photograph is never worth standing in a traffic lane or blocking an emergency passage.
