Nea Moni of Chios — Street View

Discover Nea Moni on Chios: an 11th-century Byzantine monastery, UNESCO-listed mosaics, a layered history and practical opening information.

Nea Moni stands in the mountainous interior of Chios, west of the island’s main town, in a landscape of wooded slopes and narrow roads. The Greek Ministry of Culture places the monument at Karyes; the Greek-language reference gives the road distance from Chios town as about 12 kilometres. The journey climbs away from the coast, so the monastery feels distinct from the island’s harbourfront and beach resorts. It is a working religious complex as well as a protected historic site, and visitors should treat the katholikon—the principal church—and its grounds with the quiet expected at an Orthodox monastery.

The name means “New Monastery,” a simple label that became attached to an unusually rich ensemble. Nea Moni is not an isolated entry on the World Heritage List: UNESCO inscribed it in 1990 together with Daphni near Athens and Hosios Loukas in Boeotia. The three sites are geographically separate but linked by middle Byzantine church design and exceptional decoration, especially mosaics set against gold. Nea Moni is the more compact and architecturally direct member of the group, which makes it a useful place to see how a single central church could carry a complete artistic program.
