Miaouli Square is the civic centre of Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros in Greece’s Cyclades. A short walk from the harbour, it brings together the town hall, cultural institutions, cafés and the everyday movement of residents. The setting is more than a postcard backdrop: the square took shape as Ermoupoli expanded during the nineteenth century, when commerce and migration turned this Aegean port into one of Greece’s most dynamic urban centres.
The square’s history can be read in its names. It was first called Othonos Square, honouring Otto, Greece’s first king. After Otto’s dethronement in 1862, the name changed to Leotsakos Square, commemorating Nikolaos Leotsakos and the military movement connected with the liberation of political prisoners on Kythnos. In 1889 it became Miaouli Square, when a statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis was unveiled there. Each name marks a different political moment in modern Greek history.
