Explore UNAM’s UNESCO-listed campus, its landmark murals and architecture, the Central Library, Olympic Stadium and practical visiting advice.

Mexico City’s National Autonomous University of Mexico, known by its Spanish initials UNAM, is more than a collection of lecture halls. Its Central University City Campus was planned as an integrated landscape of academic buildings, sports facilities, open spaces and public art. Built from 1949 to 1952, the ensemble brought together more than 60 architects, engineers and artists. UNESCO inscribed the central campus on the World Heritage List in 2007, describing it as a distinctive example of twentieth-century modernism shaped by Mexican traditions and the country’s pre-Hispanic past. The result is a place where architecture tells a story about education, national identity and post-revolutionary modernization.

The listed property covers 176.5 hectares within the much larger university city. Its significance lies not in one isolated monument but in the relationship among the master plan, buildings, landscape, circulation routes and artworks. The design treats education as a public project: academic life, physical activity and shared outdoor space were assembled in one setting. The campus remains an active university, so visitors encounter classes, research, sports and everyday student life alongside heritage. It is best approached with that dual identity in mind rather than as a museum whose entire grounds are permanently open on tourist terms.
