Serra do Pilar Monastery stands on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro, facing Porto’s historic center and the Dom Luís I Bridge. Its circular church and circular cloister make it one of northern Portugal’s most distinctive Renaissance monuments. The hilltop location also explains the building’s later military role and its celebrated viewpoint over both riverbanks.
Portugal’s cultural heritage authority records that King João III ordered the transfer of Augustinian canons from the Monastery of São Salvador de Grijó to this hill in 1537. The new monastery was dedicated to São Salvador do Mundo. Construction extended over a long period, producing an unusual classical ensemble in which the church and cloister use centralized circular plans.
