The Majapahit Museum in Trowulan gathers sculpture, terracotta, ceramics, coins and architectural fragments from the archaeological landscape widely identified with the capital of the Majapahit kingdom. Between the late thirteenth and early sixteenth centuries, Majapahit became a major political and commercial power in maritime Southeast Asia. The museum provides the essential object-level context for nearby gates, pools, temples and brick foundations.
Systematic interest grew during Dutch colonial archaeology. In 1924 architect Henri Maclaine Pont and regent Kromodjojo Adinegoro established the Oudheidkundige Vereeniging Majapahit to study and preserve finds; a museum opened in 1926. Collections and buildings changed after war, institutional reorganisation and new excavations. Today the museum is also known as the Majapahit Information Centre.
