Iglesia y Casa Hacienda San Juan Grande — Street View

Explore the colonial church and estate in Santiago de Surco, its 2026 restoration and what visitors should know before planning a visit.

In Santiago de Surco, a district now absorbed into metropolitan Lima, the Church and Casa Hacienda San Juan Grande preserve evidence of a very different landscape. The municipality describes the complex as a historic hacienda founded in 1581 and declared a Monument of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1972. Its parts include a church, the principal house and former rancherías, as well as archaeological and open areas. The site’s interest lies in that ensemble: it helps explain how estates, religious institutions and agricultural land once organized this part of the valley before urban growth surrounded it.

That context is important because San Juan Grande is not an isolated monument set apart from the city. Its streets and avenues now carry ordinary neighborhood traffic, while the surviving property sits within a dense urban district. The old estate offers a way to read layers of Lima’s expansion: colonial-period buildings, the later life of the hacienda and the contemporary city all occupy the same ground. Visitors should therefore approach it as a heritage site in a living community, not as a restored theme park or a free-standing museum with established public facilities.
