Hohenzollern Castle — Street View

Explore Hohenzollern Castle’s three building phases, royal history, 2026 visitor arrangements, shuttle access and views over the Zollernalb.

Hohenzollern Castle rises from the cone-shaped Zoller Mountain above the town of Hechingen in Baden-Württemberg. Its towers and steep approaches create the familiar image of a medieval fortress, but the building visitors see is the third castle on this site. The present complex is a nineteenth-century reconstruction, privately owned by the House of Hohenzollern and presented as a historic residence and museum. The setting is part of the experience: on clear days, the views reach across the Zollernalb, while the uphill approach makes the castle’s defensive position easy to understand.

The castle operator’s history distinguishes the early history of the dynasty from the documented history of the building. The House of Hohenzollern is mentioned in sources from the eleventh century, but the first written reference to a castle on the mountain appears in 1267. Archaeological investigations suggest that a fortress may have been built during the first half of the eleventh century; its exact construction date is unknown. That distinction matters: the site has a long past, yet some familiar details are reconstructions or later interpretations rather than directly recorded facts.
