On farmland outside Varberg, six steel towers form the skyline of one of the world’s most important communications monuments. Grimeton Radio Station was built in 1922–1924 for transatlantic wireless traffic and still preserves its original electromechanical Alexanderson equipment in operating condition. UNESCO inscribed the 109.9-hectare site in 2004 as the only surviving major station based on this pre-electronic technology.
Before reliable electronic high-power transmitters, sending messages across an ocean required immense machinery and carefully engineered antennas. Grimeton occupied a strategic position on Sweden’s west coast within a clear great-circle path towards New York, then a hub of the transatlantic network. Architect Carl Åkerblad designed the neoclassical station buildings; structural engineer Henrik Kreüger designed the six 127-metre antenna towers, Sweden’s tallest structures at the time.
