About King Khalid International Airport

A vast gateway north of Riyadh

King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), code RUH, is about 35 kilometres north of central Riyadh. It opened in 1983 as the capital’s new international gateway and is managed by Riyadh Airports Company. The airport’s official overview describes a site covering roughly 225 square kilometres, with five passenger terminals, 40 boarding bridges, two parallel runways measuring 4,260 metres each and parking designed for about 11,600 vehicles. Those dimensions tell travelers something practical: identify the correct terminal before setting out, since “Riyadh airport” is not a compact single-building stop.

KKIA’s scale has grown alongside the capital. The airport has a central control tower, a Royal Terminal and a mosque, as well as passenger facilities spread across its terminal complex. The original information describing the airport as having “only three terminals in use” is no longer reliable. In February 2026, the operator completed a major reallocation of airline operations across the five terminals. That change makes older articles, maps and saved directions particularly risky; current flight information from the airline and the airport should take precedence over a traveler’s previous experience.

How the 2026 terminal layout works

Riyadh Airports Company announced that, after the February 16–25 transition, Terminals 1 and 2 were assigned to international flights operated by national carriers; Terminals 3 and 4 to domestic flights operated by national carriers; and Terminal 5 to international flights operated by foreign airlines. This is a useful framework, not a substitute for checking an individual flight. Airline operations and assignments can change, so confirm the terminal printed on your boarding pass or shown in the carrier’s live booking and departure information before leaving for the airport.

The reshuffle was designed to bring domestic and international operations closer together for national carriers and improve passenger flow. It also means a connecting itinerary may involve a different terminal from one used on an earlier visit. KKIA’s passenger guide recommends arriving three hours before either a domestic or international departure. It says check-in counters may open up to four hours before the flight, with international check-in closing one hour before departure and domestic check-in 45 minutes before. Airline rules can differ; treat the airport’s guidance as a planning baseline and verify the requirements for your carrier.

Metro and terminal-to-terminal connections

Riyadh’s transit network reaches the airport. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City’s network map marks Airport T1–2, Airport T3–4 and Airport T5 stations on the Yellow Line. Because the airport has several passenger-terminal areas, check which station corresponds to your assigned terminal and consult the transit authority’s current operating information for service times and connections. The map is a helpful orientation tool, but it should not be mistaken for a live departure board or a guarantee that every service runs at every hour.

For travelers moving between terminals, KKIA currently lists free shuttle buses outside all terminals at roughly ten-minute intervals. The airport also describes taxis and ride-hailing apps as options for journeys into Riyadh, while its taxi page gives terminal-specific arrival pickup locations and says the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Follow the signs to designated pickup areas instead of accepting an unsolicited ride. For a connection, ask airport staff or use the airport map to verify the route; do not assume that a short walk between terminal labels is possible.

Arrivals, parking and meeting someone

KKIA’s official transport pages list taxi, ride-hailing, rental-car, chauffeur, car-sharing and parking options. Taxi pickup points are identified by terminal and arrival level, and the airport recommends using its marked pickup and drop-off zones. Its parking information distinguishes facilities serving Terminals 1–4 from those closest to Terminal 5; long-stay and short-stay products have different locations and terms. A live parking-fee calculator is available on the airport site. Check it for your dates and flight terminal rather than relying on a fixed rate copied from an old guide.

If you are collecting a passenger, agree on the terminal and a clear meeting point before the flight lands. The airport states that pickup and drop-off areas have a free five-minute period and warns that exceeding the designated standing time can incur a 575 Saudi-riyal violation fee. That short grace period is not a place to wait for a delayed passenger: use the designated parking or meeting arrangements and follow current signs. During busy periods, leave time for baggage collection, queues and the distance between the pickup zone and arrivals.

Passenger services and practical planning

The airport’s interactive guide and maps help locate gates, dining, lounges, baggage services and assistance points. The “Ask Me” team is listed as available around the clock, and KKIA publishes dedicated accessibility and parking information for passengers with disabilities. Families, passengers with reduced mobility and anyone changing terminals should identify the service they need before arrival and contact the airport or airline if they require specific assistance. Terminal facilities can vary, so verify the exact location instead of assuming a service is present in every building.

Riyadh can be hot for much of the year, and an airport transfer can involve waiting outdoors or moving between vehicle areas and terminals. Keep essential documents and medication with you, check the weather and allow a margin for traffic on the drive into the city. For departures, follow the airport’s recommended arrival time while accounting for your airline’s check-in cutoff. For arrivals, arrange a licensed taxi, a verified app ride or a pre-booked car, and use the terminal-specific pickup instructions. These small steps matter more at a large, dispersed airport than at a compact city terminal.

A changing airport, not a static map

KKIA’s history now includes not only its 1983 opening but also a major operational redesign in 2026. Five terminals remain part of the passenger system, yet their roles have been reassigned as the airport responds to growth and attempts to streamline connections. The rail link, inter-terminal shuttles, marked taxi areas and official digital guide give travelers several ways to navigate the complex, but accurate terminal information remains the starting point for all of them.

Before traveling, confirm RUH on your ticket, check the airline’s assigned terminal and recheck the airport’s live transport and parking information. Build in the airport’s recommended three-hour departure margin, and use the metro or terminal shuttle only after confirming the correct station or stop. King Khalid International Airport is both a major piece of Riyadh infrastructure and a constantly adapting transport hub; approaching it with current information turns its scale from a source of confusion into a manageable part of the journey.
