The Site Museum at Xochicalco introduces the objects, environment and ideas behind one of central Mexico’s most important Epiclassic cities. Opened in 1996, its six galleries display sculpture, ceramics, tools and offerings recovered through excavation. Visiting before the archaeological zone transforms plazas and pyramids from imposing shapes into evidence of trade, ritual, astronomy and political competition.
Xochicalco flourished mainly between AD 650 and 900, after Teotihuacan’s decline reshaped regional networks. Its hilltop terraces, walls, causeways and controlled entrances suggest defence and carefully managed access. The city drew on imagery and goods connected with central Mexico, the Gulf coast, Oaxaca and Maya regions without being reducible to any one of them.
