Warsaw Old Town’s market square, churches, houses and defensive walls suggest an intact historic quarter. Its story is different: during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944 and the destruction that followed, German forces demolished more than 85 percent of the historic centre. Today’s streets are a postwar reconstruction, an achievement that became part of the place’s meaning rather than a way to hide its losses.
The Old Town belongs to UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Warsaw, inscribed in 1980. The property includes the medieval core within the walls, the market, townhouses, fortifications, Royal Castle and religious buildings. UNESCO calls it an exceptional reconstruction of a deliberately destroyed city, valued for both its urban form and the collective effort that brought it back into use.
