The museum at Umm Qais is small, but it provides the key to one of northern Jordan’s most atmospheric archaeological landscapes. Housed in a restored building of the Ottoman village, it displays finds from Gadara, a Hellenistic and Roman city of the Decapolis whose ruins extend across a ridge above the Yarmouk Valley. Ceramics, sculpture, mosaics and basalt architectural pieces give human scale to the theatres, colonnaded street and monumental terraces outside. The museum and site work best as a single visit rather than as separate attractions.
Gadara occupied a strategic hill with long views toward Lake Tiberias, the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon. Ancient writers associated it with poets and philosophers, and the city developed a reputation as a cultural centre. Under Roman rule it formed part of the Decapolis network and acquired formal streets, theatres, baths and religious buildings. Byzantine churches later occupied parts of the city. Centuries afterward, residents built a village across the ruins using the region’s black basalt and pale limestone, adding an Ottoman layer that is now integral to Umm Qais.
