Just east of the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom, the compact temple of Thommanon stands across the road from Chau Say Tevoda. Their paired position makes the two monuments easy to combine, but each deserves a closer look of its own. Thommanon is part of the Angkor Archaeological Park, where a small sanctuary can reveal a great deal about Khmer design, religious imagery and the choices made by modern conservators.
APSARA, Cambodia’s authority responsible for Angkor, describes the neighboring temples as small structures along a royal avenue that led east from the area of the Royal Palace and the East Baray. Their scale differs from Angkor Wat’s vast galleries, yet their relationship to the route and to the surrounding monuments matters. A visit here is an opportunity to notice how Angkor’s ceremonial and urban landscape extends beyond the famous central temples.
