The Moravian Church — Street View

Discover Christiansfeld’s 18th-century Moravian town plan, central square, historic buildings and Sisters’ House museum in southern Denmark.

Christiansfeld is a small town in southern Jutland whose quiet streets make a larger idea visible: an 18th-century community shaped by a shared religious and civic plan. Founded in 1773 by the Moravian Church, the settlement was laid out around a central square rather than growing by accident. Its scale invites a slow walk: notice how the streets, church, communal buildings and houses relate to one another, then step into the Sisters’ House to see how the plan connected to everyday life. UNESCO inscribed Christiansfeld in 2015 as an exceptional example of a Moravian planned settlement.

The Moravian congregation that established Christiansfeld belonged to a Protestant tradition centred in Herrnhut, in present-day Saxony. Denmark was then a Lutheran kingdom, and Christiansfeld developed as a distinct religious community with royal approval. Its foundation in 1773 began a deliberately organized town, not simply a collection of houses around a church. The settlement’s urban form expressed the congregation’s principles of collective life and order. It remains inhabited, so the heritage is not an abandoned stage set: residents and an active congregation continue to live and worship among historic buildings.
