The Getty — Street View

Explore the Getty Center’s galleries, architecture and gardens, with current reservations and its announced 2027 closure.

The Getty Center begins before the first gallery. A tram climbs from the parking and arrival area to a hilltop campus above the Sepulveda Pass, where pale travertine, gardens and long views turn a museum visit into a walk through architecture. The complex is in Brentwood, Los Angeles, at 1200 Getty Center Drive. It is the Getty Center, not the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades: the two are separate museums with different collections and visiting arrangements. The Center presents art from the Middle Ages onward, while the Villa focuses on ancient Greek and Roman culture. Keeping that distinction clear is the first useful piece of trip planning.

Architect Richard Meier arranged the Center as a group of buildings rather than a single monumental hall. From the arrival plaza, visitors choose between galleries, terraces and the Central Garden. The stone surfaces change color with the light; the glass and open courtyards keep the city and mountains within sight even between exhibitions. There is a deliberate rhythm to this place: step inside to look closely at a work, then step out and see Los Angeles spread beneath the same sky. The building itself is part of the encounter, not merely a container for paintings.
